Can you say "racism?"
I don't know if that's it or not, but I am very displeased by the Academy for SNUBBING my FAVORITE MOVIE IN A LONG, LONG TIME from the Best Picture Oscar. Dreamgirls absolutely rocked my socks. No one I know who has seen it didn't leave the theatre breathtaken with it. From now on, I shall call them 'the Academy OF SUCK'. It did get 8 other nominations, and of course the lovely and amazingly talented (both in acting and SANGING) J-Hud got a nom for Best Supporting Actress. But it WON the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical. How can it not even get a nom???
Possible reasons for the blatant snub include:
--racism
--appeals mostly to women, and the Academy OF SUCK is 2/3 male
--people may have been put off by the extreme Oscar push DreamWorks made, even before the movie came out
--the movie was led by its supporting cast
--too many people liked it, not enough loved it.
--many voted for the underdogs, the smaller, well-like movies (i.e. Little Miss Sunshine, which Dreamgirls BEAT in the GGs--don't get me wrong, I loved LMS, but Dreamgirls moreso.)
--umm...the Academy OF SUCK is stupid. I have ALWAYS found that I agreed much more with the Golden Globes (i.e. Brokeback Mountain)
Whatever it was (probably a mix of more than a few), I am greatly disappointed. It takes alot for me to rave about a movie. I may be easily impressed, but not easily enthused. There is a difference.
Also, I will never turn down a viewing of Dreamgirls, so if ANYONE wants to see it, I would love to accompany you. Let me know!
